What is the relation between dreams and sleep? you will be a wonder to know that you will get most of the dreams in once cycle called the REM(rapid eye movement)stage of sleep.

What is a dream? - A dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occur involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.

What is sleep? -
a condition of body and mind which typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically suspended.

Also as per another definition - Sleep is associated with a state of muscle relaxation and reduced perception of environmental stimuli.

Now coming to dreams, as mentioned most of the dreams usually occur during certain stages of sleep, like in REM(rapid eye movement)stage of sleep.
Now you must have a question, what are these all stages of sleep, below are various stages of sleep,

REM Sleep - this means rapid eye movement of sleep, this is a unique phase of sleep in mammals and birds, this stage is also known as paradoxical sleep or desynchronized sleep. this stage also different from other stages of sleep which are non-REM sleep. both REM and non-REM sleep cycle last for 90 minutes in adult humans. In the REM stage brain acts as somewhat awake, however, the body is paralyzed. Most of the eye movements in this stage cycle is less rapid then other stages, they are also shorter in duration. These eye movements follow some waves originating in the brain stem, may relate to a sense of vision experienced in sleep

NREM sleep - this means nonrapid eye movement sleep, also known as a  quiescent sleep, there is little or no-eye movement in this stage of sleep as compared to the REM stage.also rare chance of dreaming in this stage, the body is also not paralyzed in this stage, a human may also able to walk in the sleep in this stage.there are further three stages in this NREM stage of sleep, stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3.

Different types of dreams associated with both REM and NREM sleep, early morning dreams that can be remembered after waking up associated with REM sleep, and dreams in NREM sleep are commonly the result of the memory of events "as they happened", they are more static and thoughtful dreams.
